What is compelling preaching?

Compelling Preaching refers to a style of preaching that cultivates practices among aspiring and active preachers that help them proclaim the gospel to a variety of audiences in a variety of settings in more engaging and effective ways.

The first (pilot) cohort starts in September 2025 and concludes in June 2027. The second cohort starts in September 2026 and concludes in June 2028.

At this time there is no tuition cost for this program. Participants will be expected to pay for prerequisite courses, assigned textbooks, and travel to and from Saint Mary’s College for the required summer residency weeks. Overnight accommodations and meals during the residency weeks will be covered by the grant funding.

Participants will need a computer, reliable internet access and the ability to join Zoom meetings with video and audio service.

5-7 hours a week when online courses are in session; 2 hours a week when preaching circles are in session (more time the week you are assigned to preach).

Yes! Attendance at the summer residency weeks is required. It is during those intensive weeks that we will focus on the essential vocal and embodiment skills central to the craft of preaching. We will also learn from leaders in the field of Catholic homiletics, pray, form community, enjoy shared meals and spiritual enrichment that cannot happen in the virtual setting.

If it has been a while since you have engaged in the study of Sacred Scripture or theology, applicants are strongly encouraged to take courses from the McGrath Online Catalog that will best help prepare them for engagement in PROCLAIM. Register for courses at least one month in advance of scheduled start dates. Suggested courses include but are not limited to:
